How many guests can a jersey bar handle?

There is a real number, and it is not your invitation list. Capacity comes from lanes multiplied by counter hours — and the queue stalls or flows depending on how honestly you estimated the first one.

Two planners ask this in opposite directions. One has two hundred people coming and wants to know whether a single station will drown. The other has eighty and suspects a second lane is money wasted. Underneath it is the same question: how many finished jerseys can leave the counter in the hours it is open?

Start with participation, not the headcount

The invitation list is the wrong input. What matters is how many of those people actually walk up, and that fraction swings hard on what else the room is doing. At a welcome party where the bar is the centrepiece, close to everybody goes through. Put the same station inside a festival footprint with six other things competing for the crowd and participation is a slice of attendance rather than all of it.

The arithmetic behind one lane

A guest spends around a minute at the tablet deciding and typing. The press cycle and finishing run a couple of minutes per jersey. Those two things overlap — while one guest is typing, an operator is already pressing a jersey three tickets back — so the number that actually governs throughput is the press side on its own.

That puts a warm lane in the region of twenty to thirty finished jerseys an hour. Plan against the bottom of that range.   • 250 to 600 guests. Three to four lanes plus a longer counter window. Adding an hour is usually cheaper than adding a lane, and it flattens the peak instead of absorbing it.
  • Beyond that. The footprint changes shape: more tablet stations feeding one queue board, a wider counter, a crew big enough to keep every lane fed. Large activations scale past four lanes routinely.

Your peak hour is the real constraint

Average demand describes an event nobody attends. Rooms arrive in waves. A private party dumps most of its guests through the door inside twenty minutes; a watch party surges in the hour before kickoff; a conference floor moves in blocks tied to whatever just ended on the main stage. Size the lanes against that peak and the rest of the night looks after itself.

Flattening a wave you cannot avoid

Open at doors. A counter that opens with the room spreads demand across the evening. One that opens after the speeches concentrates every guest into a single window on purpose.

Do not announce it from a microphone. One announcement sends the whole room to the same counter at the same second. Let the queue build on its own and it self-regulates.

Put the choices in the queue. A sign showing the design menu and the nine-character name limit turns waiting time into deciding time, so guests reach the tablet already knowing what they want.

Signs a bar is about to stall

A queue that stops moving almost never stops because of the machines. It stops because one lane collected a backlog while another sat idle, because a size ran out and every third guest is now having a conversation about it, or because the design menu turned a decision into deliberation at the front of the line. All three are solved beforehand: tickets dispatch to the lane with the least pending work, sizes are capped so a depleted size vanishes from the picker, and the menu stays short on purpose.

When the number is genuinely large
